The Coast

Whilst I was photographing aspects of the coast around sunset time, I learnt how to use light to my advantage. It was important that the sky was a feature in the photos so that the colours, orange, purples, pinks and blues could be utilised to create calm emotions.I had never played around with moving water in photography, but got introduced to this aspect and found final products interesting and different from all other photos.

I got a deeper understanding of camera techniques. I learnt about shutter speed which is the speed of the shutter closing and about the f-stop (aperture) which is the amount of light let in based on the size of the lens opening.

I chose to take this photo because of the contrast the dark, edgy rocks have on the soft sky. The darkness of the night effected the photo due to the lack of light. I felt the the rocks almost looked photoshopped which dramatised the overall image.

To make the photo pop with colour, I increased the saturation and cast and decreased the vibrancy. I chose to decrease the vibrancy so that the sky could be full of strong blues and oranges whilst making the rocks at the fore front of the photo dark to create looming shapes. In addition, I straightened the horizon to keep the photo balanced.

Due to the sunset, the light is diffused, creating a softer lighter look to the setting. For instance, if this photo had been taken mid day, the ocean could look dark and mysterious, where as in this photo it looks inviting and pleasant. The light house sits on the horizon, drawing viewers eyes towards the skyline.

The over-looming sky creates a very big cloudscape, focusing on the wide and whimsical shapes of the clouds and how light, oranges and purples makes the photo feel bigger.

The slow shutter speed used, 1/10, created the movement of the water. The moving water brings focus to the center of the photo in the foreground, the rock and because the water strikes upwards, it brings a great depth to the photo. This use of moving water is similar to those of waterfall photography.
